News to Use from RQ May 16th
Posted by KJCB on May 16, 2019
Hello Everyone,Normally Kyla writes a welcoming paragraph here before diving into the news. This week I’d like to take a moment to recognize the life of a wonderful woman lost late last month. Esther Koble was a customer in our store from the time we first opened 11 years ago. At that time she was in her 90s. Esther was a prolific quilter, working on her art every day. As a devout member of a religion without the clutter and distraction of television or the internet, she counted over 300 quilts completed in her lifetime. Quite an accomplishment, especially when you consider the greatest majority of Esther’s quilts were hand quilted! Each of her 5 children, 11 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren and even a two year old great-great granddaughter received quilts made by Esther. I remember once about five years ago I was talking with her as she chose fabric. She took in quilts that people wanted hand quilted, and I asked her if she had many on her list to do. She shook her head and said, “I really need to stop taking in other people’s quilts and get a few of my own finished.” I always marveled at her productivity and dedication to what she did, bringing the joy and warmth of a quilt to her family, friends, and others. It was her sheer determination and will power that got her through times like a bad fall when she was housed in a rehab center for an extended period a few years back. Only Esther would end up sharing a room with another quilter! Her visitors often found her sitting and stitching another pieced work between her exercise and physical therapy sessions. While her personality was amiable, she also knew what she wanted, and could be just a teeny bit stubborn! She told her doctor that she had a hundredth birthday coming up and she expected him to get her out of there and home before that. She had dozens (if not hundreds!) of quilting friends, many of whom would drive the miles out to her country home past our shop to visit her or pick her up. They would take Esther to attend a retreat or guild meeting to catch up on the community quilting news. As to news, Esther was quoted in magazine articles, one an article written for a French magazine.May you rest in peace Esther, with a quilt in your frame, and thread in your needle. Those who knew you will miss you. And those blessed with one of your quilts will spend their nights in peace also, under their quilt made with your love.
