My Quilting Adventure Week 44
Posted by KJCB on October 11, 2017
Today's post features a quilt that was made with two jelly rolls, a natural solid jelly roll and a patriotic-themed jelly roll. This is a quilt that will be donated to a veteran through the QOV Foundation once it has been completed.
I did something unusual for me with this quilt top. I decided that I needed to add a little more color with my thread choice instead of trying to find something that matched.
I decided a gold thread would work best with the patriotic colors of the quilt top. It seemed meant to be because I already had a cone and spool of the same color of gold thread. I love having two spools of the same color so that I don't have to unthread when I need to wind a new bobbin.
This quilt was pieced on point so the outside edges were uneven. I chose to not trim the sides before quilting to help avoid distortion to the bias edges. They were basted in place before I quilted the design on the top so there was no chance of the quilting foot getting under the edges.
You can't see the color of the thread very well, but this is a good shot that shows the pattern. I used the BERNINA Q-Matic and an edge-to-edge quilting design of stars and loops. I spent more prep time figuring the size my quilting design needed to be before I started. This allowed the design to fit evenly across the quilt.
Just when you think you're done making mistakes....I apparently put the backing on the quilt frame the wrong way. I was so close to the bottom of the backing piece that I actually based it to my leader before I realized that I was that close. Luckily there was enough to fit the quilt top; however, I did have to grab my handy seam ripper and pull those basting stitches out to get the quilt off the frame.
The backing features a print with small gold stars which was my inspiration for the gold thread on the front :)
Luckily I had a sunny day to snap this outdoor picture of the finished quilt top...it was too large to layout on the floor of RQ anywhere for a picture!
