My Quilting Adventure Week 40
Posted by KJCB on September 28, 2017
This quilt was built entirely around the chalkboard words print that runs between the pieced rows. I fell in love with the chalkboard print and found various pieces to complement it. The overall effect was a bit busy so I chose more subtle quilting to not overwhelm the abundance of colors and prints.
You may be thinking, that looks like it's on the frame "wrong." You would be right that it is on the frame differently! I loaded this quilt on the frame lengthwise so that I could quilt continuously along the rows. I created two designs that run the length of the quilt and accent the shape of the chevrons.
In the chevron rows, the BERNINA Q-Matic stitched these open heart fleurishes down the length. You can see from this photo that I didn't pay close attention to centering the design. I was focused on fitting the design within the width of the column instead of centering. I fixed that on the next row of chevrons and centered the design first.
I chose a snowflake design to use on the chalkboard print. This photo was taken while the machine was quilting at the other end. One of the great features of the BERNINA Q-Matic is that I can "quilt" while working at the store. :) It does an amazing job, check out the consistent stitch length on that snowflake!
Another shot of the snowflake used in the chalkboard print. I switched to Aurifil 40wt 2024 white instead of my usual cream for a better match.
If you're ever worried about how your quilting will look on the back, choose a busy print. The quilting disappears amongst the fabric pattern.
The fabrics are so busy it's hard to see the quilting in this photo, but it's there! It's easy to see how more dense or detailed quilting would have completely overwhelemed the fabrics in the quilt.
