My Quilting Adventure Week 39
Posted by KJCB on September 28, 2017
I am back and on a mission. My challenge is quickly winding down (can't believe it has already been a year) and I am behind! You should see a flurry of activity over the next two weeks as I try to finish as many quilts as possible before the actual deadline of my challenge. As I say in the newsletter, on to the quilts...
This quilt top was a finish by the boss aka Mom. The fabric is Morris and Co. by Barbara Brackman for Moda Fabrics and was paper pieced. She is a fan of anything William Morris and added this quilt top to her AllPeople Quilt UFO Challenge to get it finished this year. While we don't have any of this particular collection left, we are excited for the arrival of the newest William Morris collection in October of this year!
I chose to start with the narrow outer border and added a continuous swirl around the quilt. I actually used a 50wt Aurifil thread (color 2340) instead of my usual 40wt. The lighter weight thread seems to sink into the fabric more than the 40wt for a different look.
For the individual blocks, I chose to outline the background sunburst pieces to accent the shape in the blocks. (I just saw the rabbits hiding in the fabric as I was typing this blog and didn't even recognize that they were there while quilting!) As you can see in the photo, I made this into a continuous design by cutting across the bottom of the darker wedges to the next background. I also stitched along the bottom of the block to move to the next block without stopping and starting my thread (this makes the quilting process move faster).
While I chose not to quilt the quarter circles in each of the smaller blocks, I felt that the large circle that is a focus did need quilting. If you scroll back to the first picture, you can see this entire area. I quilted the large circle with an allover swirl using King Tut 40 wt Obsidian. You may notice that this area had a narrow flange separating it from the rest of the quilt. I simply slowed down my stitching and raised up the flange as I came to the edges of the large block so that the flange remained loose.
Here's a view from the back where the sunburst shape is more easily visible. I was using Aurifil 40wt in the bobbin for the entire quilt.
Another quilt top turned into a quilt! I love when they go home with someone else and aren't added to my towering pile of quilts to bind :) It might have been suggested that next year, I bind a quilt a week for a year. Not sure that my fingers would hold up for that.
