My Quilting Adventure Week 32
Posted by KJCB on June 25, 2017
Next up during this week of catch-up is "Coming Home" a cute wall hanging designed by Sandy Gervais from 2015.
In addition to the pieced blocks, this top has raw edge applique on the doors, windows, and "home" lettering. Because this is a smaller top, I wanted to work on some techniques that are still in my 'needs practice" folder.
First up was the rather wide floral border. I tried quilting some four petaled flowers with loops across the wide border. The one pictured here was the best result by far. I found that quilting a figure eight shape twice resulted in the best nesting of the petals in the center. The design let me practice planning how to fill in the space I had available and trying to make similar shapes the same size.
On the houses, I practiced straight line quilting without a ruler. Eek! This definitely requires a slower speed than I generally stitch at. I used the foot as the measurement for my width and outlined around the house and roof. I found the angled lines to actually be more challenging to maintain an even distance than the vertical or horizontal. I filled in the house with my favorite wavy plaid design.
On another house, I outlined the roof with free-motion straight lines and then filled in with loops. This house has four appliqued windows so there was less space to work with. I decided to practice quilting pebbles. Again, I think the trick to pebbles is slowing down for a more precise shape.
Along the applique letters, I outlined again using the width of my foot for equal spacing and then filled in the remaining area with stippling. This allowed the letters to "pop" a bit and stand out more on the background.
A bright and welcoming wall hanging to add to your home decor. I'll have two more quilts to share this week after I take a few more pictures.
