My Quilting Adventure Week 31
Posted by KJCB on June 25, 2017
This is my second attempt to write this blog post. The first attempt was lost on the internet somewhere so here's hoping the "save" button works better this time :) I've been busy playing catch-up this week and will start with "Giggles."
"Giggles" is a baby quilt made using a layer cake and the Sidekick Ruler by Jaybird Quilts. If you've followed my blog, you know that I love the Jaybird rulers and how easy they make piecing triangles, diamonds, and other unique shapes. There are also no y-seams which is just great!
I decided to fill in the white space on this quilt top with some color. I used a vertical back and forth pattern that was easily adaptable to the diamond shape in the quilt. I went back and forth about whether or not to quilt in the prints. I ultimately decided to leave them as they are and just quilt in the background. The design was able to be quilted continuously across the quilt top which helps decrease the quilting time.
Here's a close-up of the variegated thread with red, blue, yellow, and green. The primary colors worked perfectly with the colors in the quilt top. On a side note, this is an example of why not to piece with dark thread (why I did, I cannot say). Because of the light background, you can see the dark piecing thread behind the quilt top. I should have been piecing with a light colored thread and then trimmed my excess threads before quilting. Lesson learned.
This quilt includes a fun pieced backing that was made from the leftover layer cake squares. Is there anything better than using up all the fabric from one project?
One finished baby quilt ready for binding. I'm thinking a multicolored stripe would be a fun finish!
